Thoughts on why

Why do I take and give pictures ? Why do I have this space on the Internet ? Why do I photograph mostly analog ? So many why’s. Maybe there is no need to answer all questions in life. Why do I photograph ? Because it brings me pleasure and joy and I hope that some of my pictures can bring some joy into other peoples life too. That leads directly to the next why. To share and to communicate. And why analog ? Because it slowes me down and makes me more thoughtful of my surroundings. With a digital camera most of us shoot more careless because we have “unlimited” storage on our cameras and phones and clouds. The film roll never ends. And besides the hardware it costs nothing. As often in life what has no cost has less value. There are many great digital photos out there. They tell a story, they touch our feelings, they reach our innermost, just like an analog photo would. It is not about the picture itself. If a digital photo is taken with care, commitment and intent it is as powerful as an analog one. But most of us just shoot thoughtlessly in a sense that we make pictures because we can and then our clouds are full of pictures nobody cares to look at. And it more about the process of taking pictures. thinking about what do I want to shoot today. How do I want that picture to be. Thinking about it and being thoughtful.
